Casting Call for New Haven Open

The New Haven Open at Yale will hold an open casting call for children 12 and under on Tuesday, July 26 from 4-8 p.m. in New Haven at the Shubert Theatre. The children will have an opportunity to compete for the chance to sing “America the Beautiful” at the tournament, to be held August 19-27, 2009 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.

ASA Hall of Fame nominations sought

The Connecticut ASA Hall of Fame slow pitch selection committee is accepting new applications for 2011 induction candidates. Eligible players, both men and women, must be at least 50 years old or retired from ASA competition for five years.


Nominations are also being accepted for the Bernie Iassogna Hall of Honor, which includes sponsors, managers, commissioners and umpires.

Deadline for applications is Aug. 5. Application forms may be obtained by calling Skip Scarpellino 203-887-8860 or Tom Chiappetta, 203-984-4806.

The Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremonies for the fast pitch and slow pitch honorees are set for Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. at Costa Azzurra Restaurant in Milford.

SCSU women's basketball schedule

Southern Connecticut women’s basketball coach Meghan Brown has announced the team’s schedule for the upcoming 2011-12 season. The season opener will be on Nov. 16 versus Adelphi.


The month of November continues with road games at St. Thomas Aquinas (Nov. 19) and Assumption (Nov. 22). The team then returns home to face off with St. Rose on Nov. 27 and Pace on Nov. 30.

December begins with two road games, a matchup with American International on Dec. 3 and then a trip to LeMoyne on Dec. 6. The squad will then return home to face off with rival New Haven (Dec. 10), Eckerd (Dec. 19) and Dominican (Dec. 30).

January begins on the road at Franklin Pierce on Jan. 3. The Owls then return home to face UMass-Lowell on Jan. 7 before going back on the road to play Queens on Jan. 9. After a home game with St. Michael’s on Jan. 11, a busy January continues with road trips to Merrimack (Jan. 14) and St. Anselm (Jan. 17). The squad then comes back to campus to play Stonehill on Jan. 21 and Southern New Hampshire on Jan. 25. Then, it’s back on the road to play Bentley on Jan. 28 before closing out the month at home against Assumption on Jan. 31.

The month of February will feature only two home games. The Owls will travel to St. Rose to begin the month on Feb. 4 and then to Pace on Feb. 8. Feb. 11 and 14 will be the two home games against American International and LeMoyne, before it’s back on the road to square off with New Haven (Feb. 18). The regular season ends on Feb. 22 with a trip to Adelphi.

SCSU men's basketball schedule

Southern Connecticut men’s basketball coach Michael Donnelly has announced the team’s schedule for the upcoming 2011-2012 season. The Owls are coming off a season in which they had the third-best win turnaround in all of Division II and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament for the first time since 2002.


The season begins in November with two games at the University of Bridgeport Tournament on Nov. 12 and Nov. 13. The Owls will then have their home opener against Adelphi on Nov. 16 before traveling to Assumption on Nov. 22. The team returns home on Nov. 27 to face St. Rose and then Pace on Nov. 30.
