Congrats to Southern Connecticut State football team on its honor.

Often these awards reflect extended achievements as well, so while New Haven might have had the better all-around season, Southern deserves to be recognized for its success not only this season, but for having 11 straight winning seasons.

The Southern Connecticut State University football team has been selected as the 2011 ECAC Division II Football Team of the Year. The Owls will be honored at the annual Eastern College Football Awards Banquet presented by FieldTurf Tarkett on Thursday, Feb. 16 in the Lexus Club of MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

A reception will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the evening program at 7 p.m. The event, which drew a record 300 guests last February, will honor the ECAC teams of the year, winners of the Lambert Meadowlands Award, ECAC players and rookies of the year and ECAC All-Stars from the 2011 football season. In addition, the Red Hill awards recognizing the ECAC football officials of the year will be handed out.

Southern Connecticut concluded the 2011 season with an overall mark of 7-3 (6-2 Northeast-10 Conference). It marked the 11^th consecutive winning season for the Owls.

Another honor for SCSU's Slowley

Southern Connecticut State University senior running back Rashaad Slowley has been selected as the winner of the Joe Zabilski Award by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston. The accolade is awarded annually to New England’s top players in the Division II and Division III ranks. Slowley will be honored at a dinner on Thursday, January 12 at the Westin Hotel in Waltham, Mass.

Slowley, a Harlon Hill Award finalist, given annually to the Division II College Football Player of the Year and the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Most Valuable Player, currently ranks No. 3 in all of NCAA college football at all levels in scoring (29 touchdowns and 174 total points). He is also currently No. 5 among student-athletes at all levels in rushing yards/game (158.4) and ranks second in Division II in scoring, third in yards/game and sixth in all-purpose yards/game (181.7).

Also a First-Team All-Region pick by Daktronics, Slowley set a new school single-season record for touchdowns with 29, and a new SCSU single-game record with six touchdowns in a win over St. Anselm on Sept. 17.

He finished the year with 274 carries for 1,584 yards and 27 rushing touchdowns and also hauled in 21 catches for 233 yards and two receiving touchdowns. He reached the 100 yard mark in all nine Division II games this year and rushed for more than 200 yards on three occasions. Slowley led the Northeast-10 Conference in rushing yards, touchdowns and in all-purpose yards this year.

In all, Slowley finished his career ranked No. 2 all-time at SCSU in rushing yards (3,460), touchdowns (45) and points (272).

CT Whale on Comcast OnDemand

Whalers Sports & Entertainment and Comcast announced the launch of “Whale TV” on Xfinity On Demand, which will be available at no additional cost to Comcast digital cable customers throughout New England. The content will be accessible beginning December 26 under the “Get Local” section of Comcast’s signature Xfinity On Demand service.

Through the “Whale TV” Xfinity On Demand offering, Xfinity TV customers will be able to access a wide variety of exclusive and regularly updated Connecticut Whale features, including a weekly “Whale Watch” TV show with game highlights, interviews and other feature material. Scholarship competition open for aspiring sports journalists

The Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance will accept applications during the next 10 weeks from high school seniors seeking the 2012 Bohdan “Bo” Kolinsky Memorial Journalism Scholarship.

Named for a scholastic sports editor of the Hartford Courant who died in 2003, the scholarship provides $1,000 for the first year of college study leading to a career in sports journalism. The scholarship can be renewed at higher amounts for the final three undergraduate years if the student meets specified standards of progress. The program currently is assisting students at Syracuse, Fordham and Boston universities.

Cheshire adds half-marathon

Abilities Without Boundaries, Best Buddies CT, Cheshire Lions Club and the Town of Cheshire Parks and Recreation Department are teaming up to organize the inaugural Cheshire Half Marathon & 5K. The event takes place on April 29, 2012 at Cheshire High School and features a Half Marathon, 5K and Little Buddies Kids Run and exhibitor opportunities through a Healthy & Active Living Festival. The Half Marathon and 5K races are fairly flat and feature significant stretches on the Farmington Canal Trail. The Little Buddies Kids Run takes place on the Cheshire High School track. JB Sports, coordinator of the Stratton Faxon New Haven Road Race and many of New England’s largest running events, is helping produce the event.

Race proceeds beneficiaries include Abilities Without Boundaries and Best Buddies CT, non profit organizations dedicated to helping children and adults with developmental and physical disabilities. Bo Kolinsky Scholarship Golf Tournament

The Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance will again host the Bo Kolinsky Scholarship Golf Tournament on June 28, 2012 at Lyman Orchards Golf Club in Middlefield.

The tournament, which will have a noon shotgun start and a shamble format, is named for the longtime high school sports editor of the Hartford Courant and past president of the Alliance who died Dec. 14, 2003 at the age of 49.

Entry fee of $170 includes a box lunch on the course, buffet dinner, prizes and silent and live auctions. Entry is on a first-come, first-serve basis as the first 132 entries will play the Robert Trent Jones Course and the other entries will play the Gary Player Course. Dinner only is $50. New Haven Open launches breast cancer awareness program

The New Haven Open at Yale has launched a new breast cancer initiative to raise awareness and funds to help in the fight against breast cancer including a CYBEX Pink Ribbon Run and multiple initiatives with Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven.

The New Haven Open is a WTA event that will be held August 18-27 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.

The New Haven Open has partnered with CYBEX, a leading manufacturer of premium exercise equipment, to feature a CYBEX Pink Ribbon Run during the tournament. The Pink Ribbon Run will offer players, fans, sponsors and media the opportunity to walk or run on a special pink treadmill to raise funds for breast cancer. For every mile logged, donations will be made to Susan G. Komen Connecticut Affiliate and the Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven. Starting today, anyone can make a donation for each mile logged on the treadmill, or make a lump sum donation, by emailing pinkribbonrun@newhavenopen.com

In addition, the pink treadmill, which will be signed by all the WTA players, will be auctioned off after the New Haven Open. Starting today, bids may be placed on www.charitybuzz.com, and all proceeds will be donated to the above breast cancer charities.

“As a women’s-only tournament, and considering that one in every eight women in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer, it is a natural tie-in for the New Haven Open to launch a breast cancer awareness initiative,” said Worcester. “It is our goal to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer, especially the importance of early detection. I encourage everyone to come out and participate in the CYBEX Pink Ribbon Run in one of three ways: by walking or running on the treadmill, making a donation per mile or bidding in the auction of the pink treadmill.”

“Exercise education is a platform our company prides itself on,” said Lisa Juris, CYBEX VP of Marketing. “The CYBEX Pink Ribbon Run is designed to showcase the importance of exercise – and specifically how exercise can reduce mortality and the risk of recurrent breast cancer by approximately 50%.”

In addition, throughout the tournament guests can visit the Yale-New Haven Mammography Van on-site to receive mammograms and information on breast cancer awareness and early detection. Casting Call for New Haven Open

The Connecticut ASA Hall of Fame slow pitch selection committee is accepting new applications for 2011 induction candidates. Eligible players, both men and women, must be at least 50 years old or retired from ASA competition for five years.

Nominations are also being accepted for the Bernie Iassogna Hall of Honor, which includes sponsors, managers, commissioners and umpires.

Southern Connecticut women’s basketball coach Meghan Brown has announced the team’s schedule for the upcoming 2011-12 season. The season opener will be on Nov. 16 versus Adelphi.

The month of November continues with road games at St. Thomas Aquinas (Nov. 19) and Assumption (Nov. 22). The team then returns home to face off with St. Rose on Nov. 27 and Pace on Nov. 30.

December begins with two road games, a matchup with American International on Dec. 3 and then a trip to LeMoyne on Dec. 6. The squad will then return home to face off with rival New Haven (Dec. 10), Eckerd (Dec. 19) and Dominican (Dec. 30).

January begins on the road at Franklin Pierce on Jan. 3. The Owls then return home to face UMass-Lowell on Jan. 7 before going back on the road to play Queens on Jan. 9. After a home game with St. Michael’s on Jan. 11, a busy January continues with road trips to Merrimack (Jan. 14) and St. Anselm (Jan. 17). The squad then comes back to campus to play Stonehill on Jan. 21 and Southern New Hampshire on Jan. 25. Then, it’s back on the road to play Bentley on Jan. 28 before closing out the month at home against Assumption on Jan. 31.

SCSU baseball ranked top team in East

The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team, which won a program record 45 games this year, finished the year ranked No. 1 in the final National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region poll.

The Owls won the Northeast-10 Conference regular season title for the second year in a row and made their second trip to the College World Series. Along the way, they defeated No. 1 Grand Valley State and No. 11 Sonoma State to reach the national semifinals.

Southern Connecticut finished the season with an overall record of 45-9-1.

Celtics-Knicks to play in Hartford Oct. 22

New Haven's Shannon Gagne DII track athlete of year

University of New Haven senior Shannon Gagne was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II National Women's Athlete of the Year for the outdoor season.

The Lyman Hall graduate also earned the award after an impressive indoor season, becoming the third Division II student-athlete to be named the indoor and outdoor national track athlete of the year.

The Meriden native recently added two more championship titles to her historic senior season by claiming the 200 and 400 meter dashes at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She also earned points in the long jump with a fifth place finish. Her three performances earned the Chargers a ninth place finish at the national championship meet in Turlock, Calif.

Earlier this year, she won three national titles at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships meet and became just the third student-athlete in Division II history to win five national titles across both the indoor and outdoor season.

Gagne has earned several accolades throughout the 2010-11 indoor and outdoor seasons. The many honors include East Region Athlete of the Year, Northeast-10 Conference Track Athlete of the Year in both indoor and outdoor seasons.

She was named one-of-three finalist for the Northeast-10 Conference Women of the Year Award and earned Capital One Academic All-District honors from CoSIDA.

Shea to speak at Diamond Club dinner

Southern Connecticut State University head baseball coach Tim Shea will serve as a guest speaker at the Southern Connecticut Diamond Club dinner on Sunday, June 5 at Monticello’s Restaurant in Meriden. Shea has led the Owls to their finest season in school history, one that includes a trip to the Division II World Series.

The Owls are currently 45-8-1, which marks the highest single-season win total in school history. Southern Connecticut also reached the College World Series for the second time in school history, having also qualified in 2005. The Owls won the Northeast-10 Conference regular season title for the second year in a row and have reached as high as No. 5 in the national polls.

The Southern Connecticut Diamond Club will honor 35 area high school baseball players at its annual awards banquet on Sunday, June 5, at Monticello’s Restaurant in Meriden. The 2011 honorees are listed below.

Each player will be presented with the John “Whitey” Piurek “There’s No ‘I’ In Team” Award. Named for the longtime West Haven High coach, the honor is awarded to the member of each team who gives most unselfishly to his program.

In addition to the Piurek awards, the club will present the Samuel Burrell Jr. Coach of the Year award to Billy Mitchell of North Branford High School. Also, the George Klivak Team of the Year will be presented to Branford High School. Both awards are voted on by the area coaches and members of the SCDC. In addition, a special recognition plaque will be presented to Coach Bob DeMayo of North Haven High School for achieving 800 victories.

Bluefish announce spring training schedule

The Bridgeport Bluefish announced dates and starting times for their 2011 Spring Training schedule. The Bluefish will hold Spring Training in Bridgeport at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard during 2011.

The Spring Training schedule will include two exhibition games against the cross-sound rival Long Island Ducks, with one contest at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The first exhibition will take place at home on Friday, April 22 and the second and final spring training game is scheduled for Saturday, April 23 at Long Island. All spring training games begin at 10:30 a.m.

Any Bluefish fan who would like to get a sneak peak of their hometown team before the regular season begins is welcome to attend. Race for a good cause: Matt's Mission 5K May 22

Over 1,200 runners are expected at the 2nd Annual Matt’s Mission 5K takes place on May 22nd at 9:30 a.m. and benefits Matt’s Mission Fund. Participants can run or walk the certified 5K (3.1. miles) that starts and ends at North Branford High School. The rolling course passes residential neighborhoods, farmlands and fields before finishing on the track at North Branford High School. After the race, participants are invited to a post race party featuring food, beverages, and entertainment.

The race is in honor of Matt Picciuto of North Branford, who died in a car accident on May 23rd, 2009. The proceeds of the race will benefit Matt’s Mission Fund. The goal of the fund is to help North Branford students in need. From winter coats to school supplies, the fund will provide relief to students and families in the community. Last year’s event raised $33,000 for the fund. There was an outpouring of support from sponsors, participants and the local media.

“Matt wanted to make a difference with his life, hopefully the Matt’s Mission Fund will do just that,” states Matt’s mother Lynn Riordan. “Our goal for this event is to honor Matt’s memory, encourage people to drive safely and to support Matt’s Mission Fund.”

"In today’s economy, many families cannot afford basic necessities that students need to prosper at school," states Scott Schoonmaker, North Branford Superintendent. "At this time there is an urgent need within North Branford school system, each runner, walker and sponsor can make a real difference in a student’s life.”

JB Sports LLC, coordinator of the Stratton Faxon New Haven Road Race and Branford Road Race, coordinates the event with Lynn Riordan. Julia's Run at Yale Sunday

A crowd of 400 runners and walkers are expected at the 12th Annual Julia’s Run for Children held at Yale University, April 10th at 9:30 a.m. This year’s 4-mile run will start and end on Yale University’s Cross Campus. Serious racers, recreational joggers, and walkers are expected to participate. (The course is slightly altered from previous years due to construction on Prospect St.) Registration fees are: $20 during pre-registration, $25 on day of the race. The price includes a T-shirt for the first 250 registrants, a raffle ticket, and post-race refreshments. There will also be a half-mile “Fun Run” for kids: $6 pre-registration, $9 on the day of race.

The annual run is the primary fundraiser for The Julia Rusinek Memorial Fund, a not-for-profit organization. The previous Julia’s Runs have attracted on average 250 experienced and beginner runners each and resulted in over $80,000 in contributions to Leadership Education Athletics in Partnership (LEAP). LEAP provides year-round academic and social enrichment programs for children and youth from high poverty neighborhoods in New Haven.

Julia Rusinek was a rising senior at Yale University at the time of her death. She died of an undetected heart condition on July 15, 1999 at the age of 21. Julia was a gifted writer, an avid runner, and a humanitarian strongly devoted to helping underprivileged children. This event celebrates Julia’s life by combining Julia’s passion for running with her commitment to making a difference in the lives of children.

The Julia Rusinek Memorial Fund was started by her family and friends to ensure that Julia’s commitment to children and love of sport lives on. With this year’s funds, the organization will continue its support of LEAP.

Sound Tigers Auction

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers will be holding a silent auction of 2010-11 Sound Tigers road jerseys during their 3 p.m. game against the Albany Devils this Sunday.

Fans will have the opportunity to bid on nearly 40 game worn and game issued jerseys from this season. Jerseys up for bid this Sunday will include current Islanders Micheal Haley, Jesse Joensuu, Travis Hamonic and Josh Bailey, as well jerseys worn by Sound Tigers team captain Mark Wotton and rookie sensation Rhett Rakhshani. All proceeds from Sunday's silent auction will go towards the Islanders Children's Foundation.

Bobby V to speak at SCSU April 15

Bobby Valentine – perhaps best known for guiding the New York Mets to their last World Series appearance in 2000 – will speak about the importance of youth sports and their effect on a person’s character on April 15 at Southern Connecticut State University.

The former Mets manager and current baseball analyst for ESPN is the keynote speaker and a panelist for the program, “The Value of Youth Sports: Developing Kids’ Character or Early Test of their Mettle?” It begins at 10:30 a.m. at SCSU’s Michael J. Adanti Student Center Theater.

The panel discussion, following Valentine’s lecture, will include Julie Greenwood, executive direction of Squash Haven, a non-profit youth development agency in New Haven; Karreem Mebane, a former professional baseball umpire who has taught classes on ethics in sports, and Valentine. Bob Picozzi, ESPN sportscaster, will take part as a panelist and will moderate the discussion.

Joseph Panza, SCSU professor of recreation and leisure, is coordinating the program, which is free and open to the public. It is designed to be the inaugural forum for the new sports management program being offered by the university’s Recreation and Leisure Studies Department.

“We frequently hear about how participating in youth sports can build character in kids,” Panza said. “Yet, others say that sports are more about testing a person’s character and that they reveal the flaws in an individual’s character. In this forum, we plan to explore both views on this topic and seek our panelists’ thoughts, experiences and perspectives from youth sports to professional athletes.”

Panza added that he is delighted to have Valentine speak on campus. “Bobby is such a well-known and well-liked personality who has accomplished a great deal in both sports and in the business world,” he said.

On April 11, SCSU will show the movie, “The Zen of Bobby V,” as a lead up to the April 15 program. The movie is about Valentine’s time as the manager of the Chiba Lotte Marines, a professional baseball team in the Japanese Pacific League. It was co-produced by Jonah Quickmire Pettigrew, son of David Pettigrew, SCSU professor of philosophy. The movie will be shown at 3:15 p.m. in the Adanti Student Center Theater and is free and open to the public.

Valentine is a Stamford native who graduated from Rippowam High School in Stamford and later from the University of Southern California. He was a utility player for several Major League Baseball teams, starting with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1969. He landed with the Mets during the 1977 season, before being released in 1979, when he signed with the Seattle Mariners. He retired after that season and then turned his focus to the business world, opening his own sports bar/restaurant in Stamford. He returned to baseball in 1985, serving as the Mets’ third base coach early in the season, when he was offered a job to take over as manager of the Texas Rangers, where he continued until 1992. After a stint as manager of the Chiba Lotte Marines, a team, in the Japanese Pacific League in 1995, he returned to the United States and managed the Norfolk Tides, the Mets AAA club. At the end of the 1996 season, he was asked to take over the Mets. He compiled a 536-467 records as the Mets skipper between 1996 and 2002. During that time, he led the Mets to the playoffs in 1999 and 2000.

Valentine went back to manage the Chiba Lotte Marines in 2003, where he enjoyed a successful tenure, including capturing the Japan Series in 2005. He became the first non-Japanese manager to accomplish that feat. He turned to the broadcasting booth during the 2009 playoffs and has been serving as a baseball analyst for ESPN since the start of the 2010 season. He also is currently the director of public safety for Stamford.

If Princeton should beat Penn Tuesday in men's basketball, the Tigers will tie with Harvard for the regular-season crown, and force a one-game playoff to determine the league's NCAA tournament berth.

That game would be held at Yale's Lee Amphitheater Saturday at 4 p.m.

Imagine Harvard earning its first NCAA tournament berth since 1946 by beating Princeton at Yale.

But if a player is academically on pace to graduate, then he has earned the right to be honored on senior day.

-- In local Division II college basketball, Adelphi visits Southern Connecticut for a Northeast-10 doubleheader, with the women tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m.

In the men's game, SCSU tries to hop into seventh place in the 16-team conference. Adelphi is 14-9, 10-9. SCSU under first-year coach Mike Donnelly is 12-11, 9-10.

In the women's game, it's the start of the Owls "Pink Zone" for breast cancer awareness.

-- The Fairfield men's basketball team, winners of 20 games thus far this season, play host to Marist at 7:30 p.m. at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport.

With a win, Fairfield would capture the MAAC regular-season championship and the top-seed in the MAAC tournament, which will be played at Webster Bank Arena. Fairfield is 20-5, 13-2 in the MAAC. Fairfield has a three-game lead in the MAAC standings with three games to play.

If you have not been to the Arena, it's very easy to get to off 95, just a quick U off the ramp, and the parking garage is right next door to the arena, and very short walk.

Also Xavier, the SCC Quinnipiac champion at 11-6, 6-, travels to play No. 3 Hillhouse (16-1, 8-0), the SCC Hammonasset champion at 7 p.m.

In girls basketball, Hamden Hall plays host to Hopkins at 5 p.m.

Quite busy for a Monday, with good variety. Almost like a box of Valentine's Day chocolates.

-- In women's college basketball, No. 14 Oklahoma travels to take on No. 2 UConn at the XL Center in Hartford at 7 p.m. in a game that can be seen on ESPN2. Just a guess, but bet Oklahoma's Sherri Coale is in red today.

-- A little closer to home, Sacred Heart plays host to Quinnipiac in a Northeast Conference basketball doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. with the women. The men play at 7:30 p.m.

The Quinnipiac women are in third place in the NEC with a 9-4 conference record. Sacred Heart is in a three-way tie for fifth a game back. Here are the standings A win by the Bobcats helps their goal to secure a home game in the first round of the NEC tournament.

The Quinnipiac men are also in strong contention for a home game in the NEC tournament with five games left. Here are the men's standings

Sacred Heart needs some help but is still in contention for one of the eight playoff spots.

-- It's high school hockey day at Rentschler Field with rivals Amity and St. Joseph taking the ice at the outdoor venue at 4 p.m. and Wallingford schools Sheehan and Lyman Hall following at 7:30.

This is a busy day, despite Yale men's basketball and Yale and Quinnipiac hockey playing on the road, and the UConn men preparing for a Sunday night game against Providence.

-- At the University of New Haven the men's and women's basketball teams play a Northeast-10 doubleheader with the men playing at 1:30 and the women at 3:30 against LeMoyne.
At halftime of the men's game, the Chargers will retire the uniform number of legendary baseball coach Frank "Porky" Vieira. Rumor has it he could play a little ball, too.

-- High school hockey fans have been waiting a long time for New Canaan and Hamden to play. The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 18, then postponed twice before agreeing on this date.

Hamden is No. 3 in the Register state poll, New Canaan No. 1. Game time is 6 p.m. at Astorino Rink in Hamden.

-- In boys basketball, the two best games to see are Wilbur Cross at Xavier and Cromwell at Valley Regional. Both games start at 7 p.m.

Cross is tied for the Oronque lead and Xavier tops the Quinnipiac division.

Cromwell and Valley Regional are the top two teams in the Shoreline Large division.

-- The New Haven Athletic Center continues to host the best of the state's indoor track meets with Class L today. The meet starts at 4 p.m.

Develop a cold, a stomach ache, an unexpected obligation, and head over to Union Station, hop on a train and head to the city. You deserve it. Heck, your kids have missed, what, 34 days of school this winter, what's an afternoon of work.

Head to the Garden for UConn-St. John's men's basketball at 7, but give yourself time to stop and indulge in a little pastrami on rye and a nice pint beforehand. Think of it as an early Valentine's Day gift to yourself.

No. 10 UConn has won nine straight regular-season meetings with St. John's, but was smoked in the first round of the Big East tournament by the Johnnies last year. And St. John's is no slouch this year. Just ask Duke.

OK, OK, WAKE UP!! The game is on at ESPN at 7. You can read about it in Dave Borges' preview and his preview capsule in between finishing up those reports for work. And don't forget to stop and get a quart of milk on the way home!

But do yourself a favor. If you've never been to the Big East tournament at the Garden, get your tickets now and plan a trip. It really is worth it.

It's NEC rivalry week in men's basketball, and Sacred Heart travels to play Quinnipiac at the TD Bank Sports Center at 7 p.m.

Coach Dave Bike, who won his 500th game earlier this season, has Sacred Heart pushing for an NEC tournament berth. The Pioneers are 4-8 in conference play, two games out of eighth-place with six games left. The top eight make the conference playoffs.

Quinnipiac and coach Tom Moore are tied for fourth place at 7-5 and are 15-8 overall.

The two teams play Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Pitt Center in Fairfield.

-- Connecticut high school hockey has a couple out of state opponents visiting with Rhode Island power Mount St. Charles playing at No. 3 Hamden at 6 p.m. Mount St. Charles has won three straight state titles and 40 overall, including 26 straight through 2003. Hamden has won two straight state titles and 17 overall.

Seton Hall Prep of New Jersey has struggled this year with a 3-12 record and play at No. 2 Fairfield Prep at Bridgeport's Wonderland of Ice at 6:45 p.m.

And there will be an interesting in-state matchup with No. 6 South Windsor (12-2) taking on No. 7 West Haven (7-3-2) at Bennett Rink at 6:30 p.m. There has been a lot of debate over the past few weeks on the Register state poll as to where these programs belong.

-- In high school indoor track, the Naugatuck Valley League championships begin at 4:30 p.m. at the New Haven Athletic Center. This meet is usually filled with some impressive performances with the likes of Woodland, Seymour, Wilby and Holy Cross in the mix.

In high school boys basketball, two very good rivalry games on tap.

First, Hopkins travels to take on Hamden Hall at 5 p.m. Hoops Morelli writes that "this is a makeup game from last Tuesday due to a snowstorm. Hamden Hall won the first meeting 87-81 on Jan. 16. Darren Payen had a triple-double (12 points, 13 rebounds, 12 blocks) for Hamden Hall and Lucas Hausman had a game-high 34 points for Hopkins the last time."

Then at 6 p.m. at the New Haven Athletic Center, Wilbur Cross takes on No. 3 Career at 6 p.m. Career can wrap up the SCC Oronoque with a victory. And a loss means Cross would be 0-4 against the city schools. according to Morelli.

In girls basketball, you can get to the NHAC early for a 4 p.m. tip-off for No. 7 Career vs. Wilbur Cross in a game that Chris Hunn predicts will determine the SCC Oronoque title.

-- The UConn women travel to play West Virginia in a 7 p.m. game in Morgantown. West Virginia is ranked No. 17 nationally and UConn No. 2. West Virginia was upset over the weekend by Pittsburgh. The game will be on CBS College Sports. Check your local cable listing to see if you get it. It is mostly a premium sports service.

-- There are plenty of local college games to attend, as Albertus Magnus, New Haven and Southern Connecticut all play host to men's/women's doubleheaders.

The schedule:
Men: Mount Ida at Alberus Magnus, 5:30 p.m.; Assumption at New Haven, 7:30 p.m.; Pace at Southern Conn., 7:30 p.m.

The SCSU men are in eighth place in the 16-team NE-10 and with a win over Pace would improve to .500 in the conference under first-year coach Mike Donnelly. Considering how far this program dropped, that is quite a turnaround.

Women: Assumption at New Haven, 5:30 p.m.; Pace at Southern Conn., 5:30 p.m.; Simmons at Albertus Magnus, 7:30 p.m.

Assumption and Pace are two of the top four teams in the NE-10, trailing DII powerhouses Bentley and Franklin Pierce. SCSU and UNH have both struggled thus far.

-- In women's hockey, New Hampshire visits Quinnipiac at the TD Bank Sports Center at 7 p.m. The Bobcats, who have been in and out of the Top 10 rankings nationally the past few weeks, have never beaten UNH of Hockey East, dropping all seven decisions. Also, Haddam-Killingworth, led by Emily Anderson (22.0 points per game) travel to play at Shoreline Large Division leader Coginchaug (14-3, 13-2), led by Audrey Biesak (15.4 ppg).

In wrestling, one of the best wrestlers in the region, Patrick Gillen leads Shelton against the top team in the region, Hand, which is ranked third in the state wrestling poll, at 6:30 p.m.

UNH-SCSU Unity thru Hoops a success

The University of New Haven and Southern Connecticut State University Departments of Athletics hosted their inaugural 'Unity thru Hoops' event on Saturday in conjunction with the basketball teams’ Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. The event focused on promoting diversity and fostering an environment of inclusion within the greater New Haven community.

Clubs and organizations from both Universities with similar goals partnered together and set up information tables in the lobby of Charger Gymnasium to share ideas about unity in a diverse population. Student groups from both institutions also performed dance routines between the women’s and men’s games. A new cheerleading group from the New Haven Boys and Girls Club also performed between games.

The 2011 ‘Unity thru Hoops’ partnership begins the annual event which will alternate between the UNH and SCSU campuses every year. The event exemplifies goal five of the NCAA Division II Strategic Plan which states to partner and build collaborative relationships with other organizations to support and enhance the diversity of student-athletes, administrators and coaches at the local, conference and national levels.

Southern Connecticut is the host of the Northeast-10 men's and women's swimming championships throughout the day. Both the men and women, two of the most dominant programs over the past decade in their respective league and sport in the region, are leading after two days of competition.

-- Well, the CIAC's new directive allowing make up games on Sunday is being used today.

Sheehan travels to play Xavier at 1 p.m. and East Hampton is at North Branford at 2:30 p.m. in boys basketball.

-- In men's college basketball, the MAAC-leading Fairfield Stags take on Rider at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard. Tip-off is 3:30 p.m. Fairfield is 11-1 in the MAAC.

-- Make it a double and take in the Fairfield women's basketball team's game against MAAC leading Marist, the Gonzaga of women's basketball. That game tips off at 1 p.m. Fairfield is 15-7 and 8-3 in league play. The Stags have knocked off Marist once each in the past two seasons. Marist is 20-2.

It's also a chance to catch up with Milford's Casey Dulin, a freshman who is seventh in scoring with 4.5 points per game. She is averaging just fewer than 10 minutes per game.

The women are 7-3 in the NEC, and in a three-way tie for third, one game behind co-leaders Robert Morris and St. Francis, Pa.

-- In Division II basketball, the University of New Haven travels to take on Southern Connecticut State in a basketball doubleheader, with the women tipping off at 1:30, followed by the men at 3:30 p.m.

-- Many games were being postponed for high schools Friday night, but all indications were the Shoreline Conference track meet at the New Haven Athletic Center would go as planned, starting at 9 a.m.

If it's played, Hillhouse at Wilbur Cross boys basketball at noon is worth seeing, as is Career at Hillhouse girls basketball, also at noon.

A daily look at the best the local sports scene has to offer ...

It's a great day to be a sports fan in the area. And with more snow/sleet/rain predicted for Saturday, you might want to break out for a night.

-- The New Haven Athletic Center is the finest indoor track facility in the state for high school sports, playing host to dozens of championship meets. Friday, at 4 p.m., the Southern Connecticut Conference holds its championships.

There are two schools of thought to track meets:
The first is the assumption that you stand and watch people run in circles. Those people have not attended a meet.
The second is the reality that you can watch several events at once, standing on the infield watching either the long or high jump, pole vault or weight events, while watching a relay race. You also get extremely close to the action, and with indoor track, you can hear and feel it as well. During sprint events its like clapping and you can feel the track vibrate.

-- Both Yale and Quinnipiac play host to ECAC hockey games.

No. 3 Yale plays Harvard; Quinnipiac plays No. 9 RPI.

Yale is sold out, but if someone offers you a ticket, or your business has them, scoop them up. Yes, Harvard is down this year, with just four wins, but this is still Yale-Harvard and no matter the sport, the rivarly is so intense. The atmosphere in this building is always exceptional, but when Harvard comes to town, let's just say the excitement just bursts out of the spout of the Yale Whale.

The Bobcats have been a bit inconsistent this season, but one thing has been consistent: they score first, they win. Quinnipiac is 12-1-3 when it scores first.

-- In men's basketball, Yale plays host to Cornell at 7 p.m. This starts a stretch of six of its next eight games at home for Yale.

If you have never been to a game at Yale's Payne Whitney, stop putting it off. This is really a gym with character ... 79 years worth of character. You get the chance to sit in chairs. A little tight, but chairs nonetheless. Look around if you go, from the moment you walk in the main entrance to the exquisite architecture that surrounds you. Then look in the trophy cases. Then look at the ceiling and the balcony and all around. Take it all in. It's one of the oldest gyms in the nation. Enjoy it.

Take a look at the banners over the rafters. Try to figure out why they are in that order.

As for the basketball, Cornell is not the same team that went to the NCAA tournament the past few years. They are 0-4 in the Ivy League. Yale is 2-2 and has arguably the best big man in the league in Greg Mangano, a home-grown product from Notre Dame-West Haven.

-- And if the AHL is what you enjoy, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers travel to take on the Connecticut Whale at 7 p.m.

In college men's basketball, Quinnipiac travels to St. Francis, N.Y. for a 7 p.m. game. At 6-4 in the conference and tied for third, this a pretty key game for the Bobcats.

St. Francis is one of five teams at 5-5 in the league. A win here gives a little bit of separation, but there is so much basketball left to be played.

Hillhouse plays host to Wilbur Cross in the first annual Elm City luge competition at Yale Bowl at 4 p.m. Well, they probably could. It might actually be the only thing that would have been played Tuesday.

If, and that's a big if, weather permits, the girls basketball teams from Hamden Hall and Hopkins will play at the Beckerman Center on the campus of Hamden Hall at 4:30 p.m.

Well, Justin Rutty is back, and all of a sudden Quinnipiac's men's basketball team (13-7, 5-4) seems ready to be the team to beat in the NEC. The Bobcats play host to St. Francis of Pa. today at 2 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center.

The Quinnipiac women struggled early, going 3-8 out of conference, but the Bobcats are the hottest team in the NEC right now, with a 7-1 conference record and host co-leader Robert Morris at noon at the TD Bank Sports Center. Bill Cloutier wrote a nice feature on Quinnipiac that you can read here.

The Yale women are 3-0 in Ivy League play after defeating Penn and play host to Princeton (2-0 in league play, 13-3 overall) at 7 p.m. Princeton is receiving votes in the AP Top 25 poll. But don't forget, Yale topped Florida State when it was ranked in the Top 20 earlier this year.

The Yale men's basketball team, which lost to Penn Friday night, is at Princeton for a 6 p.m. game.

Greg Langston's buzzer-beating shots against St. Rose and Merrimack have found their way on YouTube and are worth checking out.

The second one is pretty funny. You can hear the emotion of the videographer when the shot is made. I love the fact the kid in street clothes doesn't just jump on the pile the first time, but after he rolls off, leaps up again.

Both of Langston's shots were impressive however. Not the 70-foot variety, but clutch, knowing where you are on the court and how much time you have left types of shots.

Both the Yale and Quinnipiac men's hockey teams are on the road this weekend, but the Quinnipiac women, ranked No. 10 nationally, are home, with a game against Clarkson Friday at 7. Quinnipiac is 16-8-1. If you have not had a chance to get to the TD Bank Sports Center, it's a very impressive place.

If you enjoy track and field events, the New Haven Athletic Center on Sherman Avenue is the place to be starting at 4 p.m., with three SCC Division indoor track meets on tap: Quinnipiac, Hammonasset and Oronoque. The Athletic Center plays host to every major meet in the state, and with good reason.

The Yale women's basketball team tries to improve to 3-0 in Ivy League play when it plays host to Penn at 7 p.m. at the Lee Amphitheater at Payne Whitney. A win Friday would set up quite a showdown with Princeton (12-3, 1-0). Don't forget Yale topped a top 25 team earlier in the year in Florida State.

Looking for something different, Yale plays host to Princeton and Harvard in men's swimming at the Kiphuth Exhibition Pool at Payne Whitney starting at 6 p.m.. You can even double up with women's basketball. The pool was built in 1932. It has 2,187 seats. When you walk in you are in awe. Here's a link to more information on the facility. It might not be something you think about, but if you live in the area, it's one of those places that's worth the trip at least once.

If you're looking for a road trip, Yale's men's basketball team plays at Penn at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs are 2-0 in league play. They play at Princeton Saturday at 6 p.m.

This was one of my favorite road trips. If you love college basketball, you need to see a game at The Palestra. And you need to get there early, walk around the concourse and soak in the history of the building. The Penn fans are super, they really get into it. Get there by 5, and walk over to Abner's for a cheesesteak. It's about a three block walk. Here's a link Listen, it does not have the same history and feel as waiting in line outside at Pat's, but it's good eats.

Then either spend the night in Philly or head up to Princeton, a little less than an hour.

Well, weather is probably going to make a mess of this schedule as well, but if it holds off long enough to get games in, here's what's worth checking out.

Hamden, No. 4 in the boys hockey poll, plays host to Rhode Island power LaSalle Academy tonight at 6 p.m. LaSalle is 7-2 and has split with other Rhode Island powers Mount St. Charles and Bishop Hendricken in its last two games.

Guilford plays Cheshire in a key Division II game at Northford at 4 p.m.

In girls basketball, Torrington leaves the Naugatuck Valley League and tests its 11-1 record at No. 7 Lauralton Hall (8-2) at 7 p.m.

And you can always sit back in the warmth of your own home and watch the UConn women play at Rutgers at 7:30 p.m. on CPTV.

You can head out to see some local high school action and still not miss much of UConn's men's basketball game at Marquette, which tips off at 9 p.m. on SNY

In boys basketball, Xavier (7-4) travels to play Fairfield Prep (8-3) in an SCC Quinnipiac game at 7 p.m. Xavier is 3-1 in the division, Prep is 2-2, tied with Notre Dame and West Haven.
Should be a competitive game as Fairfield Prep tries to snap a three-game losing streak, plus you get to see a game at Alumni Hall. It's old, but it's got character.

Also some rivalry games with Trumbull at St. Joseph, Derby at Ansonia and Stratford at Bunnell, all 7 p.m. games.

And two of the top three area scorers are in action when Wilbur Cross and Gerald McLease (21.4 ppg) play at East Haven and Jimmy Gagliardi (24.6 ppg), also at 7 p.m. Gagliardi has 32 3-pointers in 10 games, though East Haven (3-7) has struggled.

In girls basketball, the top two teams in the SCC Housatonic meet at 7 p.m. when Lyman Hall travels to Cheshire. Cheshire defeated Lyman Hall earlier this year, 51-44.

There's also plenty of area college men's hoops with Johnson & Wales at Albertus Magnus at 7 p.m., Merrimack at Southern Conn. at 7:30 p.m. and Southern New Hampshire at New Haven at 7:30 p.m.

Former St. Joseph standout Demetrius Jackson plays for SNHU and coach Stan Spirou, who is in his 23rd year.

In women's basketball, Merrimack plays at Southern Conn. at 5:30 p.m. and Southern New Hampshire plays at New Haven, 5:30 p.m.

In AHL hockey both the Sound Tigers and Connecticut Whale are home Tuesday.

UNH-SCSU hoops working together

Just got this release. Seems like a good idea. Division II schools have really put an emphasis on this type of community involvement over the past few years and this fits in very well.

The University of New Haven Department of Athletics and the Southern Connecticut State University Department of Athletics are excited to announce a one-of-a-kind partnership titled ‘Unity thru Hoops.’ The event will focus on promoting diversity and fostering an environment of inclusion around the greater New Haven community.

The events will revolve around the basketball teams’ Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday, February 5 at 1 p.m. (women’s) and 3:30 p.m. (men’s). In the weeks leading up to the doubleheader, New Haven and Southern Connecticut State student-athletes will visit local schools to introduce students to the ‘Unity thru Hoops’ logo, which emphasizes categories that contribute to diversity; such as race, gender, language, religious beliefs, ability, sexual orientation, age and ethnicity.

Clubs and organizations from both Universities with similar goals are also planning to highlight the diversity of interests and multi-cultural groups on both campuses. On game day, these student organizations will partner and set up information tables in the lobby of Charger Gymnasium to share ideas about unity in a diverse population. Student groups from both institutions will also compete in a variety of dance contests between the women’s and men’s games. A reception for the student organizations, faculty, administrators and special guests will be held following the games.

The 2011 ‘Unity thru Hoops’ partnership begins the annual event which will alternate between the UNH and SCSU campuses every year. The event exemplifies goal five of the NCAA Division II Strategic Plan which states to partner and build collaborative relationships with other organizations to support and enhance the diversity of student-athletes, administrators and coaches at the local, conference and national levels.

Somewhat of a Monday Rivalry Day here in high school sports, with the Sheehan boys and girls basketball teams playing host to Lyman Hall in a doubleheader, with the boys tipping off at 6 and the girls at 7:30 p.m.

It's a shame this does not happen more often, where boys and girls teams play doubleheaders at the same venue.

In boys basketball, Branford plays at East Haven at 7 p.m. and

In girls basketball, Stratford plays at Bunnell at 7 p.m.

The Morgan girls basketball team (10-3, 9-2) travels to play East Hampton (10-2, 8-2) in a key Shoreline Large Division matchup. Coginchaug is 10-3, 9-2 as well.

Connecticut sports journalism scholarship

Applications must be received by Feb. 7 for the Bohdan Kolinsky Memorial Journalism Scholarship, awarded annually by the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance to a high school senior planning a career in sports journalism. The winner receives $1,000 for the freshman year of college and can qualify for increased aid in subsequent years. The award is named for a longtime Hartford Courant scholastic sports editor who died in 2003. Details and application forms are available at www.ctsportswriters.org.

Due to the overwhelming growth of the Stratton Faxon Fairfield Road Races, race organizers have decided the 31st annual event will take place over 2 days in 2011. The 5K takes place Saturday, June 25th and the Half Marathon on Sunday, June 26th at Fairfield’s Jennings Beach. Last year’s race had nearly 5,000 participants, this year the 5K is capped at 1,500 and the Half Marathon at 4,500. Over 1,000 runners have already entered the races. The event has been hosted from its inception by the Fairfield’s Firefighters.

Steve Lobdell, Race Director, explains “In 2009 we sold out a week before the race and in 2010 we sold out nearly a month before the event. Our plan is that by spreading the Half Marathon and 5K over 2 days we can accommodate more runners and raise more money for charity.”

The Fairfield Road Races are a non-profit organization that, with the help of its participants, has contributed over $1 million to non-profit groups in the past. Lobdell states, "This past year alone $350,000 was raised for the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Giant Steps, John Patrick Flanagan Foundation, Fairfield YMCA and a number of other local charities." Runners can get a free entry into this year’s race by raising money for Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang Camp.

“We are very excited to return as Title Sponsor of the Fairfield races and are proud to support an event that gives so much back to the community,” said Michael Stratton, partner of Stratton Faxon. Sponsoring the race is part of Stratton Faxon's 10% philosophy. That is, that 10% of case fees are set aside to support charitable causes that help better the community or civil jury system.

According to the Yale web site, A limited number of general admission and standing-room-only tickets are available for both games. Call the Yale Ticket Office at 203.432.1400 to order. All reserved seats for both games are sold out.

The game features two of the area's top four scorers: Xavier's Kurt Johnson (5 goals, 15 assists) and Amity's Corey Shea (9 goals, 7 asssists).

Quinnipiac's men's basketball team travels to Wagner for a matchup of second-place teams in the Northeast Conference.
Wagner, coached by Danny Hurley and assisted by brother Bobby, won at Hamden earlier this year, 73-68, so in terms of tiebreakers at the end of the year, this is a key game for the Bobcats.

Wagner has a very nice facility, with an extremely deep section behind the basket. It's a difficult trip from Hamden, about 2 hours, 15 minutes. Not bad on the weekend, but not sure I'd venture on a weeknight, especially with snow in the forecast.

Well, we can make this easy and copy and paste most of Tuesdays.

The weather postponed three of the four games we had picked to Wednesday, with the high school hockey showdown between No. 1 Hamden and No. 2 New Canaan moving to Thursday.

So Wednesday will feature No. 1 Mercy at No. 2 Hillhouse in girls basketball at 7 p.m. Mercy's lone loss was to Hillhouse in the season opener for both.

In boys basketball, Hillhouse travels to Xavier for a 7 p.m. Southern Connecticut Conference game, and in the Shoreline, Valley Regional travels to play defending champion Hyde at 7:30 p.m. at Fair Haven Middle School. These two teams met in the Class S state semifinals last year and also had a double-overtime game in the regular-season. Both games were won by Hyde, which was 27-0 a year ago.

On the college scene, Yale's second-ranked men's squash team travels to take on the greatest dynasty in collegiate sports history, facing No. 1 Trinity at 6 p.m. The Bantams have won 229 straight matches.

Yale's women's squash team is ranked second nationally and will play at No. 3 Trinity, also at 6 p.m,

Southern Connecticut's men's and women's basketball teams play host to a NE-10 doubleheader against St. Anselm. The women play at 5:30, the men at 7:30 p.m.

The men are 9-6 overall, 6-6 in conference play. New Haven's Chazz McCarter is averaging 10.6 points and 5.2 rebounds for the Owls.

It's also a book drive collection night at Moore Fieldhouse.
New Haven plays host to St. Michael's in a basketball doubleheader at 5:30 and 7:30 at Charger Gymnasium. The men play at 5:30, the women at 7:30.

The No. 10 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team's game against the University of New Hampshire, originally scheduled for today at 7 p.m., has been postponed until Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center due to inclement weather.

Yale basketball sweeps Ivy honors

Greg Mangano was a big reason the Yale men's basketball team opened Ivy League play with an important road victory at Brown. Monday, he was rewarded by being named the league's player of week. Mangano scored 23 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds in the Bulldogs' 69-64 victory.

Six of his points came at a very important point in the game. With Yale holding a slim 60-59 lead with five minutes remaining, Mangano made the Bulldogs' next three baskets to help Yale hold off the pesky Bears. He finished 11-of-17 from the field and added a pair of blocks.

Mangano, a junior, from Orange, leads the league in rebounding (10.2 rpg.) and blocked shots (36) and is fourth in scoring (14.6 ppg.). He has posted double-doubles in each of the last three games.

After leading the Yale University women's basketball team to victory over Brown in the Ivy League opener, freshman forward Janna Graf has earned recognition from the Ivy League for the third time in four weeks for her efforts.

Graf scored a career-high 26 points in Yale's 66-54 win over Brown on Friday. She also had four rebounds and a pair of assists in the victory. On Monday afternoon, the Ivy League announced that it named Graf as its Player of the Week and its Rookie of the Week for her stellar effort. It is the first Player of the Week honor of her career at Yale and her third Rookie of the Week honor in the last four weeks.

Well, most likely it’s going to be best to stay inside and dry, but if somehow this storm misses us, there’s plenty to of exceptional high school action in the area tonight.

In high school hockey, No. 2 New Canaan travels to No. 1 Hamden for a 6:30 p.m. game. Hamden has won back-to-back state titles, but word of mouth through some coaches is that this might be New Canaan’s year with a lot of talent and depth.

In girls basketball, No. 1 Mercy looks to avenge its lone loss of the season against No. 2 Hillhouse at the New Haven Athletic Center at 7 p.m. Both teams are 10-1. Hillhouse topped Mercy 55-47 in the season opener for both teams.

In boys basketball, Valley Regional (7-1) gets the chance to prove its the class of the Shoreline when it travels to play defending conference champions Hyde (5-3) at Fair Haven Middle School at 7:30 p.m. Last year these two teams met in the Class S semifinals and during the regular season Hyde won a thriller in double overtime.

You can also check out No. 3 Career (9-0) when it plays host to Lyman Hall (8-2) or travel to Middletown to see Xavier (6-3) take on Hillhouse (6-1) at 7 p.m.

On the collegiate scene, Quinnipiac’s women’s hockey team, which just cracked the Top 10 nationally, plays host to New Hampshire at 7 p.m. at the pristine TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats are No. 10 in the nation and have the highest scoring freshman in Kelly Babstock, who has 20 goals and 20 assists so far this year.

In the AHL, Bridgeport plays host to Providence and the P-Bruins at 7 p.m. at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard. For more info on the Sound Tigers, click here

And if you are stuck at home looking for things to get your mind off the snow and ice and cold, here are two options coming up that will at the least, make you think about spring and baseball:

-- The Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce Sports Council will host a Hot Stove Breakfast event featuring sportscaster Ron Darling (former Mets starting pitcher), Dr. Rich Diana (former NFL player for the Miami Dolphins and Red Sox Orthopedic Consultant), and sportscaster George Grande on Wednesday, January 26 at the Long Wharf Theatre, 222 Sargent Dr., New Haven.

The Hot Stove breakfast runs from 8-10 a.m. The cost is $25. The event is sponsored by Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists.

The Quinnipiac men's basketball team travels to Brown for a non-conference game at 1 p.m. After a horrific loss to Bryant the Bobcats responded with a nice win over a Central Connecticut team you just know was going after the jugular. There are a handful of high school games today, with the Hillhouse boys playing New York City's Robeson at 11 a.m. in the Big Apple Invitational.

In girls basketball, Chris Hunn picks Morgan at Coginchaug as the game to watch today. Tip-off is 3:30 p.m. in Durham for this Shoreline showdown. Coginchaug is 9-1, 8-0 in conference play, and Morgan is 8-3, 7-2.

Both state AHL teams are off today.

SCSU baseball schedule

Southern Connecticut released its 2011 schedule. The Owls will look to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the last seven seasons this spring. SCSU opens the 2011 season on February 19 with a doubleheader against C.W. Post and Felician in Morehead City, N.C.

Of the team’s 48 games, the Owls will play 15 contests at The Ballpark at Southern Connecticut.

SCSU football honors

Five members of the Southern Connecticut football team – William Chaffin, Willie Epps, Sam-uel Johnson, Richard Kirkland and John Wiechman – have been recognized with year-end honors from the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference as Division II Football All-Stars.

They were also previously honored as All-Northeast-10 Conference selections for their play during the 2010 season.
