The Boz headed to New Haven

One of the best things the people at the Walter Camp Football Foundation have done of late is honor 25th anniversary teams, inviting those that were honored a quarter century ago back to New Haven.

This year thus far three former players have committed to attend the event, including former Oklahoma standout Brian Bosworth. His NFL career was far from memorable, but for a time, when he was in college and just starting in the NFL "The Boz" was one of the great characters of sports.

Must admit this poster was on my dorm wall in college. My roommate was a big Seahawks fan. Was a little surprised to see it starting for $49.99 on EBAY

Also committed from that class of 1985 are Napolean McCallum and Tony Casillas. David Fulcher, last year's Alumni award winner has been a staple at the event the past several years, so expect him to return.

Several other alumns, including Tony Dorsett, who usually makes an appearance at the Saturday dinner, are expected to attend.

No word yet if Bo Jackson, who is a member of the 25th anniversary team, will be in attendance, though the Walter Camp people have been in contact.

Maybe Bo and Boz can do a little goal line stance at the Yale Commons if Jackson shows up.

The Walter Camp Weekend is Jan. 13-15.

Sound Tigers host a good cause

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers will host a charity hockey game on Saturday at 4 p.m. between the Bridgeport and Worcester Fire Departments to benefit the Bridgeport Fallen Firefighters Fund.

“We are extremely excited and proud to hold this event,” said Bridgeport Firefighter Joe Lachioma. “We’ve worked with the Sound Tigers for years and this is a great way to honor those who have lost their lives while trying to save others.”

The game between the two respective fire departments will take place prior to the Sound Tigers 7 p.m. game on Saturday against the Worcester Sharks and will honor the families of Bridgeport Firefighter Michel Baik and Lt. Steven Velasquez. Baik and Velasquez were tragically killed in the line of duty on July 24, 2010 in Bridgeport.

The Bridgeport Fire Department will also be selling t-shirts and calendars as well as raffling off a Sound Tigers autographed jersey. All of the proceeds will go to the Bridgeport Fallen Firefighters Fund.

Whole lot of football ...

Not a bad week to be a football fan in this state.

-- UConn gets a BCS Bowl berth to the Fiesta Bowl.

-- Walter Camp will announce its Player of the Year Thursday on ESPN and the complete team will be in the Register Friday.

-- Hall of Famer Floyd Little of New Haven will return to his native city for the first time since his induction when he is a guest of the New Haven Gridiron Club at its dinner Thursday night.

-- Joe Theismann visited Rentschler Field Monday to speak to student athletes preparing for this weekend's high school state football championships. Read more in Mike Pucci's blog but should be some very competitive games this weekend. You can also catch up on high school football here

Impressive week

Stop for a moment and thnik about sports in Connecticut this week on the collegiate level:

UConn women's basketball is ranked No. 1

Yale hockey is ranked No. 1

UConn men's basketball is ranked No. 6

UConn football is headed to the Fiesta Bowl.

Separately all impressive accomplishments. But when you think about all of this happening in the third smallest state, it's pretty amazing.
