One of the best things the people at the Walter Camp Football Foundation have done of late is honor 25th anniversary teams, inviting those that were honored a quarter century ago back to New Haven.

This year thus far three former players have committed to attend the event, including former Oklahoma standout Brian Bosworth. His NFL career was far from memorable, but for a time, when he was in college and just starting in the NFL "The Boz" was one of the great characters of sports.

Must admit this poster was on my dorm wall in college. My roommate was a big Seahawks fan. Was a little surprised to see it starting for $49.99 on EBAY

Also committed from that class of 1985 are Napolean McCallum and Tony Casillas. David Fulcher, last year's Alumni award winner has been a staple at the event the past several years, so expect him to return.

Several other alumns, including Tony Dorsett, who usually makes an appearance at the Saturday dinner, are expected to attend.

No word yet if Bo Jackson, who is a member of the 25th anniversary team, will be in attendance, though the Walter Camp people have been in contact.

Maybe Bo and Boz can do a little goal line stance at the Yale Commons if Jackson shows up.

The Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, who is voted on by the Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be presented live on Thursday, December 9 during the 6 p.m. edition of ESPN SportsCenter.

The players:
Justin Blackmon, Sophomore, WR, Oklahoma State – Leads nation in receiving yards (158.9 ypg) for the 9-1 Cowboys; has caught 84 passes on the season, 16 for touchdowns.

Da’Quan Bowers, Junior, DL, Clemson – Leads nation in quarterback sacks (13.5) and ranks second in tackles for loss (22.0) for the Tigers.

Andy Dalton, Senior, QB, TCU – Has passed for 2,897 yards and 23 touchdowns for undefeated Horned Frogs; has also rushed for 415 yards.

Kellen Moore, Junior, QB, Boise State – Leads nation with 191.45 passing efficiency; completing 71.9% of passes for undefeated Broncos.

Cam Newton, Junior, QB, Auburn – Second in nation in passing efficiency (183.6) for 10-0 Tigers; has passed for 2,038 yards and 21touchdowns and rushed for 1,297 and 17 scores.

Terrelle Pryor, Junior, QB, Ohio State – Ranks fifth in the nation in  passing efficiency (166.4 rating) for the 9-1 Buckeyes; has passed for 2,136 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Denard Robinson, Sophomore, QB, Michigan – Second in nation in total offense (340.7 ypg) for 7-3 Wolverines; has passed for 1,990 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushed for 1,417 and 12 scores.

Jordan Todman, Junior, RB, Connecticut – Second in nation in rushing at 147.0 yards per game for Huskies; has rushed for nine touchdowns.

Former NFL All-Pro defensive back David Fulcher is the recipient of the 2009 Walter Camp "Alumni Award."

The Walter Camp "Alumni of the Year" award is bestowed on a worthy individual who has distinguished himself in the pursuit of excellence as an athlete, in his personal career and in doing good works for others.

"We are pleased to recognize David Fulcher with the Walter Camp Alumni Award," Foundation president Alphonse Paolillo, Jr. said. "David’s impressive playing career is just a small part of how great a person and friend he is, especially to this organization."

A native of Los Angeles, Calif., Fulcher was a standout collegian at Arizona State University and was a member of the 1985 Walter Camp All-America team. Selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the 1986 NFL Draft, Fulcher went on to play eight professional seasons (seven with the Bengals and one with the Los Angeles Raiders).

Considered one of the game’s hardest-hitting strong safeties, Fulcher was a three-time All-Pro selection (1988, 1989 and 1990) and was the 1989 NFL Defensive Back of the Year. His 31 interceptions rank third on the Bengals’ career list.

Fulcher will be honored at the organization’s national awards banquet on Jan. 16 at the Yale Commons.

Former Stanford and Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway is the recipient of the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s "Man of the Year" award.

Elway joins a distinguished list of former "Man of the Year" winners, including Roger Staubach (Navy), Gale Sayers (Kansas), Dick Butkus (Illinois) and last year’s recipient Morten Andersen (Michigan State).

The Walter Camp "Man of the Year" award honors an individual who has been closely associated with the game of football as a player, coach or close attendant to the game. He must have attained a measure of success and been a leader in his chosen profession. He must have contributed to the public service for the benefit of his community, country and his fellow man. He must have an impeccable reputation for integrity and must be dedicated to our American Heritage and the philosophy of Walter Camp.

"John Elway’s heroics and remarkable success on the football field are well known, but his continuing support of the game of football and the greater good symbolizes the life of Walter Camp and make John a deserving recipient of the Man of the Year Award," said Foundation president Alphonse Paolillo, Jr.

After a storied scholastic career, Elway played at Stanford and set numerous school and Pac-10 offensive records. Elway earned Walter Camp All-America honors in 1982. Elway was the first player selected — by the Baltimore Colts — in the 1983 NFL Draft. He was traded to the Broncos a week later. Elway also played baseball at Stanford and was the top selection of the New York Yankees in the 1981 summer draft just two years after being drafted by the Kansas City Royals.

The NFL’s career leader in wins by a quarterback, Elway played 16 seasons and was selected to nine Pro Bowls. He was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 1987 and the AFC Player of the Year in 1993. Elway is the only player in NFL history to pass for over 3,000 yards and rush for over 200 yards in the same season for seven straight years (1985-91).

Elway, as well as all of the major award winners and members of the 2009 Walter Camp All-America team, will be honored at the organization’s 42nd annual national awards banquet on Jan. 16 at the Yale University Commons. Sponsorships and dinner tickets are available by calling 288-CAMP.

Saturday is Walter Camp Day at the Bowl when the Yale Bulldogs host the Leopards of Lafayette College at 12 noon.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation in conjunction with the Yale-NH Hospital Auxilary's Toy Closets Program is asking fans to bring a new unwrapped toy* to support the cause and in return, receive a free general admission ticket to the game.

Toys can be dropped off at the Hospitality Village on Central Avenue, which is located near Gates D & E.

This is the 10th year the Walter Camp Foundation has coordinated this toy drive and the first with event sponsor, the law firm of Berchem, Moses & Devlin, P.C.

The Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary's Toy Closets program was developed to provide new, age-appropriate and educational toys to pediatric patients at the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital.

Founded in 1993 by Ann Nyberg, WTNH News Channel 8 anchorwoman, the Toy Closets help insure that pediatric patients come away from their hospitalization with a pleasant memory. In addition, the toys serve as gifts for special occasions such as birthdays and holiday celebrations for hospitalized children.

Toys, gifts and financial contributions are needed throughout the year.

The success of the Toy Closets program is directly related to community involvement, such as Walter Camp Day at the Bowl.

The Auxiliary encourages schools, organizations and businesses to make the program the recipient of their community-minded efforts.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has released its preseason Player of the Year Watch list. The 30-player list includes six who were on last year’s All-America team.
The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists in early November. The 2009 Walter Camp Player of the Year will be announced live on ESPN SportsCenter on December 10. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s annual national awards banquet on Jan. 16, 2010 at the Yale Commons.
