Former Amity wrestler wins bronze at Pan-Am games

Steve Matson, a 2009 Amity High graduate, won the bronze medal in Greco-Roman style wrestling at the Pan-American Games, recently held in Managua, Nicaragua.

Eleven high school and college wrestlers, ages 18-20, qualified for the Games. Matson placed fourth at a national event that sent him to the world trials, held at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Matson finished second at those trials to earn a berth to the Pan-Am Games.

Matson was a 2008 Register All-Area selection in wrestling.

He was also the recipient of the Bob Casey Courage Award in 2009 from the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance. Matson was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 6, and received a bone marrow transplant from his older brother.
